Just because you are suffering from a toothache does not necessarily mean that you have a cavity.  There are many conditions that can cause similar oral pain. Despite the reason, the first thing you should do is make an appointment to see Dr. Silva so that he can determine the cause of your discomfort and get you on the road to recovery.

When you see the dentist for a toothache you may be surprised to find that tooth decay is not the culprit.  Other causes could be a tooth infection, possible gum disease, maybe your bite has changed or you could even be experiencing residual pain from grinding your teeth while you sleep.

It could also be much more serious.  Did you know that pain around the teeth and jaws can be a symptom of heart disease?  If Dr. Silva feels this may be the case, he will refer you to a physician as soon as possible.

Now, of course, tooth decay is the most likely scenario.  You can usually distinguish pain from a cavity when you experience discomfort while eating something very hot or very cold.  These extremes can cause the nerves in your tooth, which may be exposed due to decay, to send shooting aches and throbbing sensations, making you feel downright miserable.

If you cannot see the dentist try some of the following options:

  • Rinse your mouth with warm salt-water.
  • Floss to very gently remove any food particles that are trapped between your teeth.
  • Take over the counter pain medication orally. Never put an aspirin or any other pain killer directly against your gums or teeth.  These medications can cause burns and exacerbate the problem.
  • Place cold pack against your jaw or the area of your face where you feel the most hurt may relieve the pain until you can be seen.

Dr. Silva and his staff pride themselves on helping their patients in emergency situations, so please do not be afraid to call if you feel you need help right away.

As usual, most of these symptoms and problems can be prevented by good dental habits.  Brush your teeth at least twice a day, floss daily and see Dr. Silva regularly for examinations and cleanings. You may be able to catch a problem before it becomes a pain. Now that’s something to smile about!
