Halitosis, or bad breath, is a temporary issue for some people but can be an embarrassing problem for people who suffer from gum disease and poor dental hygiene. There are certain foods, bad habits, and other health conditions that cause bad breath but it can be improved with proper dental care. However, if your bad breath doesn’t seem to improve, you might be suffering from a serious condition you haven’t been aware of until now. If you’re experiencing bad breath that won’t go away, the time is now to visit your dentist to find a solution to the problem.

There are many causes of bad breath:

  • Food particles are broken down in your mouth each time you eat. Certain foods, such as onions and garlic, cause bad breath.
  • Tobacco products cause bad breath, as well. Even chewing tobacco can leave an unpleasant odor in your mouth.
  • Another cause of bad breath is poor dental hygiene. If you don’t brush your teeth or floss daily, food stays in your mouth and causes bad breath.
  • Portions of your tongue can even capture those bad smells.
  • Dry mouth mostly occurs during sleep. That’s why we wake up with bad breath.
  • Some medications can cause bad breath.
  • Infections in your mouth that leave open wounds can cause bad odors.
  • Some diseases may also cause bad breath.

To prevent bad breath, brush your teeth after each meal. Floss after each meal too. Brush your tongue. If you wear dentures, clean them properly. Hydrate in order to prevent dry mouth. Avoid foods like onions and sugary foods that leave behind bad breath. Finally, schedule regular checkups with your dentist.

If you have bad breath, look over your oral hygiene habits. If nothing seems to work, schedule an appointment with Dr. Bruce Silva.
