- Make Sure Mouthwash Contains Little to No Side Effects. Watch out for unwanted ingredients found in mouthwash, such as alcohol. This can cause a burning sensation in the cheeks, tongue, and gums. Concentrated mouthwashes can lead to ulcers in the mouth, sodium retention, root sensitivity, and even changes in taste sensation.
- Use Mouthwash With Fluoride. Mouthwash with fluoride coat the teeth with a protective film that strengthens tooth enamel, making it more resistant to decay.
