Braces aren’t just for kids anymore. According to a study, an estimated four million Americans wear dental braces and one million of those are adults. This number stems from previous owners of braces whose teeth have shifted back to their original positions and also from the many adults who never took advantage of treating their teeth sooner. Currently, Invisalign is a modern teeth straightening technology, and because of the many benefits associated with the product, it is steadily growing in popularity.
Invisalign consists of custom-made, mouth guard-like clear plastic aligners. The aligners are removable and are replaced every two weeks. This option has become increasingly popular because the aligners are almost invisible and patients have an easier time eating and drinking. Invisalign works well for subtle dental issues and is available for adults and children. Invisalign’s parent company, California-based Align Technology, claims more than three million patients worldwide.
They’re not visually appealing to most people, but the traditional metal brackets are still a popular option for both first-timers and those wanting to fix their teeth for a second time. Although the traditional braces are an inexpensive choice, the disadvantages outweigh the benefits. Traditional braces require brackets and wires unlike Invisalign technology. The wires can poke and irritate the mouth, brushing and flossing require more effort, and traditional braces have many food restrictions.
Other less popular teeth straightening options include clear brackets, ceramic braces, and lingual braces. Clear brackets, which allow patients to improve their smile while avoiding the metal, do take longer to straighten teeth than traditional metal braces. Made popular by Tom Cruise, ceramic braces come with tooth-colored wire, making them blend in more but might be susceptible to staining. And lingual braces are the same as traditional metal braces, except that the brackets and wires are placed on the inside of teeth.
