Sugary Dangers of Pumpkin Spice Lattes

October 9, 2018 by silvadds20170

The fall season is here and Pumpkin Spice can be found everywhere, especially in our coffees. The fall favorite Pumpkin Spice latte is available to enjoy on a cold or rainy day and although it’s delicious, it’s not the healthiest option for you or your teeth. Pumpkin Spice lattes can cause damage to teeth in a couple of big ways, but that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy one every now and then and still keep a healthy smile all autumn long.

First, the bad news: Pumpkin Spice Lattes are loaded with sugars that are harmful to your teeth. Always watch your sugary intake because sugars advance oral problems like tooth decay and gum disease. When sugars come into contact with the bacteria in your mouth, this causes harmful acids to be released into the mouth and onto your teeth. If the acids remain on your teeth for a long period of time, this will cause cavities, which if left untreated create holes in your teeth, causing pain and tooth loss.

The second harm Pumpkin Spice Lattes cause is teeth staining. In general, coffee stains your teeth over time but it can be prevented. Food and drinks that are dark in color will stain your tooth enamel as bacteria sets within the holes of your teeth, giving your teeth a yellow look.

  • Brush at least twice a day.
  • Floss daily.
  • Visit your dentist regularly.

Keep your smile happy and healthy this fall by limiting the amount of Pumpkin Spice Lattes you consume. Ask your baristas for a healthier option for your body and teeth. If you think your teeth have been damaged by too much coffee, schedule an appointment with Dr. Bruce Silva today and we can discuss options for a healthier-looking smile.
