Gum disease affects everyone, even pregnant women and their unborn babies. It is likely that gum disease can trigger biological fluids that induce labor, causing the baby to be born too early and too small.

Most women notice a difference in their teeth and gums during pregnancy. Gums may appear redder, swelled, and could bleed easier while brushing. This occurs more frequently during pregnancy because of increased levels of hormones, estrogen, and progesterone. Fortunately, these effects recede after the baby is born.

Follow these tips to ensure healthy gums and teeth during a pregnancy.

  • Women considering pregnancy should get a checkup from their dentist to treat any oral problems before.
  • Drink plenty of water as pregnancy dry mouth can put women at a greater risk for tooth decay.
  • Brush twice daily for two minutes with fluoride toothpaste. Use a soft bristled toothbrush.
  • Floss once a day to clean between the teeth.
  • Omit sweet and starchy foods and replace with fruits and vegetables.
  • Eat foods that are high in calcium, such as cheese, milk, beans, and vegetables.
  • Morning sickness, a symptom of pregnancy, contains acid that can erode your teeth if left in the mouth. Rinse your mouth out with water or mouthwash after morning sickness.

Take care of your teeth and gums. It’s important for you and your baby. Keep following Dr. Bruce Silva for more dental health tips.
