Since the very first time your parents dragged you to your first dental cleaning, visiting the dentist is something you’d rather avoid. While you know it’s essential, the dread of going to the dentist can be overwhelming. A new poll suggests 50% of patients fear going to the dentist and would rather do almost anything else.

Almost 10% of people would rather get up close with a shark than visit a dentist. According to the same poll, the smell of a dentist office was enough anxiety to create fear for some people. Others dreaded the idea of feeling pain by sharp, shiny instruments. So, if it’s been a while since your last visit, here’s what to actually expect.

The first thing you want to do if you currently don’t have a dentist is find one that makes you feel comfortable. After that, schedule a checkup. You’ll want to visit your dentist regularly to prevent any dental problems that could arise.

The dental assistant will most likely take x-rays of your teeth. X-rays diagnose problems otherwise unnoticed, such as damage to jawbones, impacted teeth, abscesses, cysts or tumors, and decay between the teeth.

Checkups include a complete cleaning, which includes the removal of built-up plaque and tartar that cause cavities, bad breath, and gum disease. Your dentist or dental hygienist will also polish and floss your teeth.

Then, your dentist will perform a final, thorough examination of your teeth and gums. They will look for signs of disease in order to prevent problems from becoming serious by treating them as soon as possible. If any additional treatment is required for your teeth, schedule a follow-up before you leave, and don’t forget to always ask questions – we always want our patients to know as much as possible about preventative measures or their treatment and what to expect.

You don’t have to dread going to the dentist. It’s a great way to stay healthy. Just remember to see us every six to twelve months to ensure you maintain good healthy teeth and so that we can catch anything before it gets serious.

Don’t find another excuse not to visit the dentist.  You are not alone in your anxiety and should know that skipping your regular dental checkups can lead to major health problems.  Not taking care of your teeth has been known to lead to heart disease, strokes, infections and even some kinds of cancer.  Be brave and take control of your oral health.  Here are some tips for keeping it as painless as possible:

Find a dentist you can trust.

Anxiety about dental care can come in various conditions, from pain, to embarrassment, to nausea. Every person is different.  One thing they have in common however is being comfortable in the chair and with the dentist and their staff.  Dr. Silva has been happily providing quality dental care to satisfied patients for more than 30 years.  He loves the Austin area and serving his community.  He is always learning and exploring new skills and techniques that can help improve his patient’s lives.

Be Honest.

Let Dr. Silva know about your fears and the staff will do everything they can to make you comfortable.  If it’s been a long time since you’ve had dental care, go ahead and let them know.  Starting a new relationship with a fresh perspective will only make you more apt to keep up the good work and visit the office on a regular basis.
