Summer is around the corner and our children are excited to embark on fun journeys throughout the summer break. As parents, we need to ensure they are continuing their proper dental hygiene while they are out of their normal routine. We also need to make sure we’re caring for our teeth during this time as well.
• Stay on routine with your oral care. Make sure to brush at least twice a day or after every meal. It could be difficult for your children to forget this while they’re enjoying their summer vacation. And don’t forget that space in between your teeth need to be cleaned too. Floss between your teeth at least once a day. Most children don’t have the motor skills to floss every day until they’re teenagers so they may need guidance at this time.
• Just because you and your child are on vacation doesn’t mean you have to give up on healthy, clean eating. Say no to sugary drinks and snacks. It will be difficult to stay away from bad foods while the family is enjoying a nice, hot summer day but sugary foods have a long-term negative effects on your teeth. Replace bad snacks with fruits and vegetables and allow your kids to tell you when they’re hungry instead of offering up snacks throughout the day. It not only is good for your teeth but your regular health, as well.
• Schedule your back-to-school dental visit now instead of later. The end of summer is a very busy time for dentist’s offices because everyone is getting a dental checkup during that time. Beat the crowds and visit the dentist for yourself and your kids while the wait is shorter. This will help prevent children missing class if dental problems are found right before school starts.
Call Dr. Bruce Silva now and schedule an appointment before the wait gets long. If you have questions regarding proper dental care, don’t hesitate to give our office a call.
